I know that feel, actually.
My NTFS partition on my primary SATA drive keeps corrupting for whatever reason, it actually wasn't picked up by the BIOS about four times now, and it won't last much longer I'm afraid.
It's really bad that I'm still using a 200GB IDE drive with ~7 years of power-on time, no bad sectors, nothing. The failure rate has grown on recent hard drives.

keep a spare low capacity hdd with just an operating system on it for those kinds of cases. works for me.

This is the first time I've ever experienced a harddrive crash, so I'm not paranoid enough to go HAM with a RAID1 configuration across 16 harddrives so that if fifteen corrupt I'll still be golden. One harddrive is suffice for me.

Got an external hard drive?

Both just as unreliable. Nothing is failsafe, but it's always nice to keep backups of important files on both flash device and mechanical device.

Carbonite is failsafe.

Bought a 660ti 3GB for $289 and comes with a free copy of AC3.

Going to double up my job hunting desire and hopefully get another job in order to buy another one.

The life of a sysadmin with no permanent OS ;-;

On a side note, I just set up an instance of Ubuntu inside Ubuntu using Ubuntu, on Ubuntu.
