How well will I be able to play Skyrim with an ATI Raedon HD 4200?

I don't get the ATI card naming thing.
Wouldn't it be more logical the higher numbers are the most powerfull?
The first number is the series number. Each series is more up to date and future proof than the last. Then the last 3 number do follow a "the higher the better" system, but the number that is considered the highest or lowest seems to change all the time because they want to forget with people.

low to medium settings probably?

Probably not well if the recommended is an HD 4850.

chances are you've got a terrible PSU and you'll need to get a different one.
I'd know, I have a dell computer and it's got the stufftiest power supply possible.

You should be good for Skyrim with a 5770. The recommended gpu as far as amd goes is a 4890.

And recommended was for high settings.
Or a 6570, I think.

They name them the exact same way that nVidia do, the first number is series, the second is model, and the rest pretty much are power related (e.g 4650 isn't as good as a 4670).

Okay. Is it possible for me to upgrade my current computer?

What resolution do you run on your monitor?
What budget do you have?

My mom wants to get me this Viao for Christmas, but the battery life and the weight... bleck... I think I should go with a Dell XPS 14z instead, because of battery life.

Damnit lol

1336X768,
and I have $600.
Would it be better to just get a new computer?

Alright.
The Vaio is heaps better than the Dell. Also, they are better quality than Dells.
Also, your price budget is $1400?
If that's the case, you could get an amazing gaming laptop, if you want I can suggest some.

Yeah. There's the $600 one in OP, or if you have specific needs, ask and I'll get you a custom one.

I think the Viao is fine then. I won't carry it around much and will probably use it as a "mobile desktop" on vacations, and I am sure there is a car adapter for the charger.

You didn't answer my question.
If you are using it as a mobile desktop, wouldn't you rather something that is far more powerful, and better built (Sony aren't that great at computers) for the same price?

Could someone recommend me a high-quality GPU for under $300

What slots do you have on your motherboard?
What wattage/model is your PSU?
How big is your case? i.e is there enough space for a 10 or so inch long video card that is dual or even triple slot?
What CPU do you have?
