well, when something air tight gets hotter the air inside of it expands, putting pressure on all the weak spots. the air inside the can has probably been pushing and releasing the lid for some time now, making it weaker. it finally gave, popped off, fell off the can and rolled onto the floor. that can also happen when food spoils and gives off gas.

I don't see what reason the tin has to get hotter. It's colder inside this house than most other houses, and since it was night it was even colder.

If there was a rise in temperature, the internal pressure of the can could pop off. It works in reverse too, like seal a metal container at room temperature, put in freezer, vacuum-induced structural failure

I'm pretty sure the gas itself increases the temperature as the pressure inside increases, so the can was probably hot on the inside. Did you feel the lid, was it hot or warm??
