Author Topic: My school's administration is stupid when it comes to running Mac networks.  (Read 3954 times)

Honestly, Macs are better for schools.
And anyway, the PCs they get are always old stuffty ones.
Nope. Macs have much worse support for "networked" (enterprise/corporate/centrally managed) networks.

my school is pretty good at blocking stuff. they blocked browser minecraft from running without disabling java or the website. schools really shouldn't use macs, they are too user friendly. kids need to learn how to deal with the tough stuff before they get to slack off in the shiny world of mac.
Err, since when are Macs user friendly?

have you ever used a mac? you can basically find any command you need by using the help bar at the top of the screen. the files are really easy to get to and everything is marked relatively clearly, as opposed to the clusterforget which is a pc's file system. it also has finder, which is a lot better than the windows search tab at finding stuff.

Then old am I?

Use preview next time. Judging by your grammar, and the fact you're in elementary school, I think you are probably 9 or 10.

He doubts that you are the computer geek at school, not that you're in elementary school.

LTHS has the most laughably bad IT department I've ever seen. After the school blows ridiculous amounts of money on a barely functional blocker (that includes my own fabulous but now outdated http://www.jaycordeiro.co.cc/ as "tasteless and offensive"), a weird math program that just bothers everyone called ALEKS, and numerous other unnecessary wallet busters, they still have every computer running XP and a super out dated version of Internet Explorer. Most of the computers are crap in the first place, with some rare exceptions. FUN FACT most of these rare exceptions have a "PREINSTALLED WITH WINDOWS 7" sticker on them, yet the school still went ahead and dumped XP on them. Hell, even the entire school network is slow as all hell, despite them only using roughly 12% of it's total bandwidth and power (At least at last count thanks to an informant senior who's interning with the school's IT department). They even have ginormous security gaps despite apparently being so paranoid. For example, the school automatically prevents any and all executables that they haven't personally approved from being run. However, if you simply rename a program "paint.exe" (Yes, as in Microsoft Paint), it can be run just fine. It's a damn shame, considering basically everything else about this school is baller as all hell.

Use preview next time. It wasn't intended to be an emote

lol, an argument between two people i don't know.

By use preview next time, I meant you left out "How". You said "Then old am I?".

Not really an argument.

no no, it's a heated and violent argument.

My school filter is Barracuda Web Filter. It LEARNS. Every website you go onto tracks into other related networks. Say, I got onto a website that has a list of proxies, I click on one. Blocked. Then I click the other proxies, all blocked. Smart thing.

My school's webfilter blocks these forums under the category: Games

no fun allowed QQ

For my school, if I google something and it's blocked, I just click cached and it shows me it.

Err, my school is (almost) a Mac shop. It's hell and displays how poorly suited MOX is for any centrally controlled network environment. And no, finder isn't superior to Explorer.

The official policy at my school is that nobody can install anything at all, but almost every teacher will look the other way if they catch someone installing firefox or chrome.

my school bought 30 macs for a computer lab (we have 7) and they installed windows xp on all the macs
