Uh... Game engines almost never ever account for "smell..." I believe he does say he can smell you, but it's a bluff. You're in a loving sewer - even if you did have a smell, how could he distinguish it?

Because maybe he has a heightened sense of smell or something?

I just know that once you get within a certain radius of him, he can automatically detect you and begin chase.
