Code Geass R2: 10

HAHAHA WHAT
Yeah I'm not entirely sure either. I don't recall it being that good. I need to rewatch it.
Now that I've rewatched both seasons. I stand by my rating. The season was a spectacular wrap to the series and anyone who doesn't think it's any good hasn't finished the season. It is different from the first one. Things get confusing and some people's motives don't make a lot of sense at the time, but the further in you go the more you realize what happened. Granted, on it's own I would perhaps rate it 8 (as I did, I changed my rating of the season mid way through) but now that I've finished it: It is a solid 10 and I god damn love the series. In a story heavy anime like this I simply can't rate a season simply on it's own, I have to take into account the earlier ones.

Perhaps the people who don't like the series watch it as a mecha anime? I don't. I haven't seen any "real" mecha anime but the battles and mech designs in Code Geass are confusing, not particularly great, and sometimes silly. (I mean come on. An all pink mech for a girl? loveism woo. Plot conveniency strikes in around the mid point in the series when everyone suddenly has wings when it initially was "how can that thing fly?!". I guess the artist got sick of drawing all them ghettos.) I totally lost track of all the mechs and who they belong to as they seem to keep changing very often with all the upgrades and stuff. I could only keep track of the main trio since they were color-coded.

Overall I find the mechs and their battles to be just tools. Not the real meat of the anime, almost something like filler, a way to move the story forward. They aren't particularly creative and since this isn't a very realistic anime there aren't that many ways to animate damage on an already complex mech so it's either cut at waist or instant fireball. I found the characters' personal stories, motivations, and actions to be far more interesting. I didn't notice any clear story arcs either. (Apart from what happens after the events in the sword of the whatchamacallit.)

If you can get over the fact that people's faces are basically triangles you should really give the anime a try. And don't watch it as a mech anime! Btw their openings and closings are really stuffty. Not a single good one.

Edit: I forgot! Everyone is like 17 in the anime. Of course they are. I like it much more when I just ignore that and think they're in their mid 20's.

I prefer series with characters that aren't "BALANCING THEIR WACKY ALTER-EGOS WITH HIGH SCHOOL"
That's probably why I've enjoyed Canaan and Jormungand so much, none 'o that stuff. And, uh, the gun research.

I prefer series with characters that aren't "BALANCING THEIR WACKY ALTER-EGOS WITH HIGH SCHOOL"
I agree with that. It's always this high school bullstuff. But it almost kind of sort of works here. At least it's not terrible apart from those two or three high school filler episodes.

the ending to R2 was great but the rest of it was loving stupid

it lacked consistency in pacing which was one of the strong points of the first season and none of the side characters were interesting or relevant

the only good part about R2 was the part about C.C.'s past

and forget you Colors is a great song
