all I know is it caught people off guard because it decided to become a "dark" anime. Was that the only appeal or no?

also should I watch the Bersek Golden Age movies or just read the manga?

It didn't "decide" to become a dark anime. Anyone who thinks that is kind of really forgetin' stupid because there are signs in the first episode that stuff's going to go down. But to answer your question, it's legitimately enjoyable as a series because of its characters (except Kyuubey because forget Kyuubey). Also the third movie is forgetin' ace.

you can't really see artwork by gekidan inu curry and think "oh yeah everything in the opening is definitely happening in this series"

Madoka gets a certain amount of praise for the plot twists, but i think it has really good story-telling. The episodes get progressively better, climaxing at around the second to last episode. I think the ending was a little gimmicky and contrived, however. I should add that I haven't seen rebellion so perhaps it resolves better there.
