That might be because their ability is Technician (although unlikely.) Try using a Rock-type or Flying-type instead to beat the gym? Rock-type moves would have 4x the damage on Scyther due to it being a Bug/Flying-type

Oh, that soudns good. I've got Rock Smash on a level 4 rattatta. I don't know why i taught it that.

lol.. despite it's name, Rock Smash is a fighting move (if I'm not mistaken). Try using your Onix instead. It learns Rock Throw on level 14, which should be really effective against Scyther.

ON my way to Goldenrod. A friend helped me out, but it was a Magneton that eventually helped me out in the end.
