My mom hit a classmate on the head with her mathbook back when she was in school.
She didn't get in trouble with it because the teachers agreed that the kid she hit with the book shouldn't have been messing with her like he did.

Alabama has self defense laws that let you get out of a lot of trouble in self defense
of course how much trouble you still get varies with the severity of the thing you're defending yourself from and how you responded to it
for example if somebody tried to kill you you'd probably just get fined for killing them
but if they were unarmed and only trying to steal something from you and you killed them you'd still be in some good trouble

I live in Georgia, tho.
