You don't have to, but if you enable downloads through the server to, you might not get some textures, and you'll download all my tools and knick nacks.
I'd download and install the map and gamemode, then join with downloads disabled.

It would be wonderful if I could download the Gmod content for stuff like Episode 2, without actually buying the game. So I have the Gmod stuff but no Half-life.
