Perhaps the whole futuristic chinese thing has to do with one of the endings of Dark Descent, where Agrippa brings you to some sort of other place, perhaps the setting of Dark Swarm is where he brings you.

Well, apparently you play as a different character. The newer place had more... amazing views than this game would. Don't think that's where.
