If I ever record myself playing Blockland, I notice how often I switch betwixt first and third person.
In Minecraft/TF2/Half-Life/whatever, it confuses me to be in third person.
In any game that requires aiming, third person is terrible.
In any game that requires you to be aware of what's around you or to move+look around a lot, third person is pretty good.
