If you could find a full, non-AI crew to operate a ship, you'd easily do better in combat situations over a full AI crew. The AI crew is good at doing one autonomous task, and unfortunately they don't always do that task well, where real people could perform many tasks simultaneously (such as moving the ship AND firing).
