I would post something about Homeworld but I've been doing that too much recently so instead I'm recommending a space game that isn't well known. It's called Star Ruler and it's one of the best Space 4x games I have ever bought. 10-10,000 star systems with 10,000 x 2 or more planets or anomalies per star system. It's massive and takes days to finish a single game if larger than 1000 stars. You are able to build your own ships, name planets, control diplomacy, use warp technology etc.
You can get a mod for the game that adds Homeworld 2 spaceships.
