Did you notice older Aang's voicing?  It sounded like they did a good job on making him sound like the child version of him.  It was very similar.

It's a mini-series, it's not suppose to be as long. I'm not sure if the developers wanted it to be a mini-series or if Nickelodeon forced it as such, but that is what it currently is.
