Author Topic: Blockland needs some viral advertising.  (Read 15128 times)

All right, first of all, I didn't know Blockland had ads, I've certainly never seen any before. I only learned about it from my cousin Derek.
Second, in response to the wall of text a few pages back, there ARE members of the CURRENT community who are refusing to accept new members. They're called ID national socialists.
(inb4grammar national socialist corrects me on that)
How are there unsold IDs in the 2k's anyway, and how does a person get them?

Back to the point, I think the ID national socialists would absolutely freak out if BL got 100k keys sold. I mean, they're idiotic enough already. I ran into an ID national socialist once who just threw pointless insults and acted generally stuck up, despite the fact that I could easily outdo him in all sorts of ways. He's never scripted in his life (I make script edits here and there), he fails at DMs (I saw him on one once, he got massacred), can't build worth stuff (I investigated some of his builds on various servers purely by coincidence).

Conclusion: ID national socialists are moronic hypocrites who refuse to see that they themselves are "n00bs" or that they have "n00bs" among their own.

Back on topic.
I don't hate people for having a high ID, but it really does seem like the higher ID people I meet are annoying and/or stupid. Example: hammering the admin and blowing everything up after being told to stop repeatedly.

Everyone does that. Even people up to your ID.

Well, it is a reasonable conclusion to think that high-ID player's are relativly new, although this assumption is not accurate by itself, but could help you get an idea of the player's experiance.

Despite this, I could do without the ID profiling. Being a '30ker' does not make someone an idiot, nor will it ever.

Basically walking up to someone random in real life and saying "Ogm u n00b cuzz u 30k!!!!1eleven!!"

No it does not. Apparently ignorance == idiocy to some...

Let's face it, all of us used to be the "high ID" people at one time.

Indeed.

I remember when 12Ks were despised... Ah those were the days...

The problem with getting some of the people on youtube who frequently popularize indie games to make videos about blockland is multi-faceted. Blockland does not really lend itself well to videos except for machinima and showing off already-made builds with nice pans and vfx, neither of which somebody who has just bought a blockland key is going to be capable of making for their youtube channel. Watching a person build with lego in a 15 minute video is not interesting for anyone but the person making it.  The second part is that there's a lot of bits of blockland that we take for granted. I would imagine that, were someone like Tobuscus or Totalbiscuit or the Yogscast to boot up blockland and join a server, in all probability the impression made would be very poor. In the more likely scenario that they just booted up a single player game, they would get the vanilla blockland experience. What the person giving their impressions of the game would NOT KNOW, where they to do this is that a lot of blockland's problems and shortcomings are fixed in add-ons and the reason they aren't patched into the game is because add-ons are taken for granted in the community. Blockland is an OK game without add-ons, but I honestly think that it looks quite poor in comparison to a blockland with some brick packs, the smooth brick textures and a good colorset. I really am not sure that this is a barrier that can be circumvented and thus having someone external promote the game is pretty much out.

Has anyone seen that video on youtube when New York or whatever turns into a giant pixelized video game? We could do something like that with Blockland but I cant imagine the cost.

Well, I think the only way we can get a decent membership increase is to lure them in and get them to stick.

Hopfully, with the "Shadows and Shaders" update, we can have something to show off to the internet to appeal to the asthetically inclined.

All in all, we simply need to focus on simple but cheap / free advertising. Youtube videos are good and all (which you should apply as many possible but VALID keywords as possible), simple threads in forums that have some form of focus on games are another possibility. I've already mentioned this, we could use "missionaries" for Blockland. Convert the non-belivers!

Has anyone considered posting a decent, informative and interesting thread in game forums that have game discussion boards?

Minecraft has one, I'd imagine Blockland could get some decent exposure. Even if it doesn't reel in a large amount of people, every little bit helps.
great idea someone should do it.

What if someone makes a stop-motion animation of a blocko minifig building in a real world environment? Maybe he could find trouble with some lego minifigs. Someone needs to make a real high quality blocko minifig though.
I had a neat idea once that a Blockhead stumbles apon a portal to the real world (or a lego stumbles apon a portal to Blockland) and they jump in and play around in the other world.

Now that I think of it, A lego stumbling apon a portal to Blockland would make a much better ad for Blockland.  It'd really send the message "It's like legos on the internet" since the legos are literally jumping into an internet world known as Blockland.

I am strongly considering doing this, once Shaders are out I will most likely start production.

I really like this idea.
