why does cut time exist?

Sometimes cut times are used to change a feel in a song to make it faster and the time is cut so everyone would play with a different feel.

I know what purpose cut time serves, but why cut time?
why not just make two-beat measures, and half the size of each note from what you would normally write
let's say there's a cut time, four-beat measure
there are four quarter notes in that measure
but since this is cut time, it will sound like there are four eighth notes
so, why don't you just instead, write four eighth notes in a two-beat measure?
it would make it a lot easier to read
