I think Shaper is Abandonware, so you can "crack" it here.

Don't use shaper to model your stuff, it's not all that good.
Blender is free, and with the correct tutorials, easy to learn.
This is the video I watched to learn the entire 2.49 interface.
It's a bit long, but I learned a lot.
This is the video for the entire interface for the current version of blender.

As for animation, you'll have to do that in 2.49.
Here's a version demian posted with the exporter already installed.

Extrude:
Google Sketch-Up is the easiest modeling program, and is very easy to create blocko or highly detailed models with it.

It can also export to any format, it has thousands of free plugins, and even more tutorials.

In my opinion Sketch-up would be a good starting place. Pretty nice easy program with good exporting options. Of course I still suck at using it but whatever
