Author Topic: Has anyone here ever hosted for TF2, CS:S, TTT, or any other source game?  (Read 1211 times)

I'm thinking of starting up a gaming community out of anger and frustration towards the disorganization and general bad quality of most gaming communities that are CS:S and TF2 based.

Problem is, I've never done it before, so I'm asking for the assistance of anyone who has any experience.

I'm starting out basic so I have a few plans in mind.

I'm going to:
  • Register a domain name, so I can host a MOTD page and a PHPbb or SMF forum for the purpose of ban requests and ban appeals, along with bug reports.
  • Set up a MOTD page for the purpose of briefing the rules in a TTT server and giving brief news about other servers.
  • Hire a team of unpaid admins and hopefully get the server set up with Steambans to help me log ban history.

The real goal in this is just to create a gaming community focused on fun and entertainment that maintains itself with appropriate moderation.

If any of you can offer any assistance or tips in starting this, send me a PM or post in the thread.

I've started and worked with a lot of communities from the ground up. Main thing is don't get discouraged. Your server can sit empty for 4 months before a consistent player base is established. And check statistics if you don't believe me, but don't recruit everyone. The more members of your clan / community that are winning games in the server, the less populated it'll be. People get discouraged when they hear about a crazy good team. Look at Hells Gamers, its very rare that someone on HG is leading on their office or dust servers. Look at DogZ, their members are rare on the server. GCG, same deal. Hope I was of some assistance.

I've never done anything like this before, but I could offer you web hosting if you would like.

A community TF2 server would be great.  I wouldn't mind stopping in from time to time just to play.  Unless you guys started doing "donation" nonsense, where there are reserved slots and you pretty much pay to be admin or whatever.

I'm not poor nor Irish so I don't intend to capitalize on something I love.

Thank God.  Nothing I hate more than a good server that shoves "donation" bullstuff down people's throats, especially when they kick people for slot reservations.

"HEY GUYS I DONATED I GOT A loving ROCKET LAUNCHER AND YOU GET PUNY FISTS!!!"

Now you can silence the filthy peasants who don't agree with your zealous opinions! Oh oh! And you can ban people from your servers because they hurt your feelings in servers you don't own!

I'll be and admin in TF2 and Trouble in Terrorist Town If you get it working. You can trust me bro we played Haven and Hearth together once.

Quite the opposite actually, I'm going to try and forge a system where the admins aren't tempted to flaunt their power.

It won't be an issue though until I actually get a population in the server.

And no, I'm not creating a community just so I can be a power-hungry douchebag.

You're also using the term, "Zeal" incorrectly.

Don't react, It was just a simple take, I mean, who even cares about these mind prefixes?

I see what you did there.

But wouldn't that be a suffix?

Suffixes(postfix basically) come after, prefixes come before.
