I don't think archery is a great skill to learn if your main focus is self defense, and it's definitely not the best means of protecting yourself. It's more of a sport or for fun. Master pro archer versus 8 year old with a gun I think the 8 year old wins so in these days and age a bow and arrow is not a great defensive weapon.
