the economy of the different cities influences things in your city, to roughly quote them, "real cities don't exist in a vacuum where they are completely unaffected by events in other cities."
I believe that means there will be some kind of world economy, involving trading between player's cities and such.
Now, it's worth noting that the game requires a constant internet connection, which sucks for a lot of people.
