Trying to Root a Nook Color, Help?

I'm trying to root my refurbished Nook Color (I'll use "NC" for it now), and how much would a Micro SD card, and if it's legal/illegal or void my Terms of Use or not. And, mainly, will it slow down my NC or does it have any risk?
