i'm always hearing that it's too wonky and not very reliable for making animations, though it's true i haven't heard much about sprite sheets.

is the free version a trial? there appears to be a Get Free button and then a different button for a 30 day trial, sort of weird.

dude just use the pencil tool
it's the exact same thing as the one in paint.net/paint
also, 0 threshold on the bucket for fillin stuff
