i need to know how to shade the buildings

I'm having some trouble making tree texture, it looks like rocks somehow.

it's supposed to be sideview and tileable and im trying to keep it within this palette (3x3, 16px tiles)

having a hard time though, any help?

EDIT: This version looks slightly better but still like GARBAGE

That is a lot better.
what to keep in mind is that trees are a naturally visually noisy subject, and it does pay to reflect that, and also that they often have clearly distinguishable branches and boughs and thus have parts that are further forward and other that are further back.
I don't really know what you mean by sideview here though.

Thats a scarf not a neck
maybe u should add a tail to it because around the neck it honestly looks pretty comical

fixed em a while ago
Oooh you're going somewhere! Just add one more layer of highlights and it should give it a whole lot more depth.
