How do you go with itemizing and do you start with AD and lifesteal or AP and spellvamp or what

So I got demoted, apparently in Bronze it is a good idea to fight in the fiddlesticks ult, while your Jayce builds straight lifesteal.
I really don't know if it is me who is stuff or my team anymore...
