Shyvana outscales the hell out of Renek if you play her right. She really does everything Renek does but way better. However, she lacks any form of hard CC besides the knockback on her ult, which isn't particularly great. So if your team needs some CC, pick Renekton. In almost every other case, however, Shyvanna is a stronger pick.

Does the duration of his stun even make up for the fact that you're trading an AoE knockback for a single target stun?

It's situational for the most part; If your team doesn't have too much hard CC and your comp is more of a pick or poke comp, then the stun, while being single target definitely might be worth it to hold a person that's out of position in place for long enough for your team to pick them off.

Well generally a pick comp is reliant on mistakes (ie someone out of position), so in my opinion that's where renekton would be better than shyvana. However, in every other case id say shyvana.
