Author Topic: Games; and why we love them.  (Read 701 times)

Game design is a sort of hobby of mine. I'm not a programmer or someone who finishes big projects, but I enjoy creating ideas for games.

That said I've always been interested in why people like games, and what makes it fun and enthralling for the player.

So I figured I'd ask this to you all; why specifically do you enjoy the games you do.

Example:

I enjoy games with valuable upgrades. Games like Toss the Turtle or say more recently Diablo 3 are the first examples that come to mind. The ability to buy things is a gimmick in almost all games, but these two do it right because every time I get a better piece of armor or a new cannon it feels well earned.

I enjoy games that let me create, or immerse me deeply in the story. If I get to invent the story it is mine and therefore makes me want to play a game longer so I can finish it, and in a way finish my character's story. If it is the game's story to tell then it better tell it right, or make up for it by being just way too fun.

I'd appreciate it if the responses were thought out to some extent.

Things like why you like to shoot zombies or why you enjoy "God mode" power ups help me get a better idea of what a variety of players want and enjoy in the games they play.

The faith I have in quality answers borders on meager, but thanks for taking it into consideration

i'm geekiest of the geek

I'd love to grab anything and use it as a weapon
every game has objects for decoration but never allows us to grab it and smash people's skulls in with them

Why do we love games? To troll people on them.

Deadrising frying pan sprees.

I just loved frying pans, guns were for pansies.

Hope it was worth the money.

I know as a fact, that people love games where you unlock things, or can buy things with earned points. And short levels, lots and lots of short levels. You can see this in every game that ever made more than a million dollars.

But I like games with infinite replay value, or randomization. Because they never get old.

KSP is my favorite game and I love it because you can do whatever you want in it.
If you want to strap rockets to a truck and make it go faster than the speed of sound, you can.
If you want to mission an organized trip to the moon then you can.

I love games that let you do what you want and not set objectives. Test your creativity.

I like games that are fun.
