It's a 2d TDM and CTF game

You start with a basic gun, hammer, and grappling hook.
then you can find upgrades around the stage and ammo.

When you die you loose collected weapons.

By that logic, games like Super Mario Bros. and Kirby would be childish, if you're talking about the style of the game.
