Anti-aliasing only works on the pixels touching eachother. When it's transparent the outside pixels won't be smoothed. Blurring it was the only way to make the outer pixels smoother.

anti-aliasing works on any shape made out of pixels no matter it's surroundings

Maybe if it was against a colored background, but it doesn't work against transparent pixels.
