Try to see if there is a hobby/gaming store near to your house. If there is, see if you can walk/bike/hitch a ride there. If you only stop by once a month, it'll still be fun.

I was thinking paint remover, but I wasn't sure if it'd mess up the plastics.

Yeah, I'm going to be driving soon. I'm already fantasizing about geek trips to hobby shops.
