Duke Nukem Forever Shotgun - Tally?

I went on Duke Nukem Forever today and found this rather interesting "feature" I shall call it, because I couldn't think of anything else on the shotgun.
There is a tally towards the right end. What is this a reference to?

that or a reminder that it holds 7 shots
