Open the console using the tilde key (looks like this: ~ )
type in "connect " without the quotes, and be sure to include the space after connect!
Then, after "connect " paste the IP address. So when you enter Niven's IP along with the connect command into the console, it should look like this:

Or copy and paste the above code entirely. Then press enter. Joining through friends also works.
