axes have more weight than swords, which equals more skull-crushing/splitting potential

Except they cannot stab, so if you fight in a thing corridor you can only effectively attack by raising and lowering your axe in a vertical direction. This makes it harder to use as lifting weight with your arms out is very hard. Normally you would chain together the axe attacks in order to keep momentum, or you would drag the axe behind your back and then lift it over your shoulder. You cannot do any of these axe moves in an alley. With a sword you can just stab people and not worry about it.
