Didn't that virus just attack you're DNS to like forget it up so you won't be able to use it?

It changed it to its own server, hence the name DNSChanger. I don't known the specifics of the virus, but there is a lot you could do by with this, like directing people to other sites where they would get infected with more viruses. If you removed the virus then went back into the control panel and changed your DNS back everything would work again. Unless it damaged some system files too, in which case you might have to do a repair install.

I'm so glad I defined auth.blockland.us in the hosts file, because Blockland servers like crashing if they can't reach the master server.

Why can't we have some sort of address caching to prevent issues like this, so long as the master server doesn't move like it did once?
