Why do bodies in L4D2 disappear?

If your computer can't handle it, the game will likely "terminate" the corpses after a while. On my high end computer, there tends to be large amounts of dead zombie corpses. Considering how detailed the gore is, it's pretty understandable for the game to be made to do this.
