Just run the forget away from them, and kill giant rats instead.
You can kill bears when you have a good set of armor.
Zombies, however, are muuuuuch harder to kill than bears, and I've told myself to screencap the triumph before butchering their corpses.

I went west, and the game just ended.
Checked the chatbox, turns out I encountered some 400 sharks at the same time.
My health was -261/56, loving handicapped.
