| Man 2:
--- Code: --->GO WEST You find yourself in a warmly-lit tavern. Patrons from all walks of life eye you cautiously. A BARTENDER stands at the counter to the left. Exits lead EAST and SOUTH. >GREET BARTENDER You greet the bartender with a warm smile. >STORE Item Quantity Cost Description >Ale 999 5g a cold mug of ale. >Bread 999 7g half a loaf of fresh bread. >GET 5 GOLD FROM PACK You take 5 gold from a dusty backpack. >BUY ALE You buy a cold mug of ale for 5 gold. >DRINK ALE You drink a cold mug of ale. +5 HEALTH >GO EAST --- End code --- I've never played a text-based RPG I really liked. I'll get that out of the way from the start. The concept is spectacular--anything you can't render with CGI can be made in text by just describing it and leaving the reader/player to imagine it for themselves. And it's not that I lack the imagination to play these games, I just lack the patience. Everything's on a rail(exits lead EAST and SOUTH), and I don't feel free at all. Yesterday I tried a text-based game called Midkemia Online, based on the writings of Raymond E. Feist(which you should read because they're pretty awesome). I played a troll, and twenty minutes in got killed by a carrion crow. It's difficult for me to read what's happening and keep track of my vitals as well. This led to my death at the hands of common woodland creatures. That damned carrion crow. Anyway, everything in a text-based RPG is like a choose-your-own-adventure novel; I hate those things. I guess I want to like these games because I like to read. I just can't play them. What are your thoughts on this era of gaming? |

They make me get out paper and keep track of everything going on, though I like them because you can take your time and think up new actions without being pressured. Zork had me drawing a map of the place, and it was pretty fun. |
