I believe its currently owned by HP, its a budget computer division. Its an extremely well known brand. :o

They often create a computer design and then release it with several different versions, some extremely cheap with low end hardware, and occasionally they have higher end models.

I've always found them to be extremely affordable, reliable, and have wonderful customer service. You just have to spend time finding a good model.

Best laptop I ever had was an emachines E627.

First one I ever used was either a Compaq, eMachines, or Gateway.

It's not that bad money wise, I didn't buy the accessories at the same time as I built it. So the computer itself was about $700.

I have two different hp dv6 laptops, one that can do shadows and shaders just fine, and the other that can't.  Oddly enough, the one that can't is the newer one.
