you could make a ghost player appear behind you when you move fast, or have some sort of emitter on the player that copies her node colors and makes a trail with them

That would only make the image 2d.  With the new S&S update, the shadows would not cast correctly on the emitters.

that's not how emitters work and that would probably look horrible anyway

implying havok and unreal are the only game engines that can conceivably support motion blur

even minecraft is capable of motion blur lol
