In fact sony gave out thousands of copies of wipeout HD for free just because.

Come to think of it, the only game i've seen them do recently is Wipeout

Maybe they just like to put a lot of time into their stuff

It's hard to say because you can never know, but whenever a company is bought up/monopolized and then closed by the buying company, there are bad feelings. You feel like the company could have done better if left alone and not under that control. You wish they just broke them off instead of forcing them to nothing.
