Roof light effect

I've wondered for a while, how do people get the affect of a light put on the roof making the floor glow? Like in these pictures




I thought maybe I could try using an ambient light on an invisible brick, but instead I just got

Try raising the light source up a bit.

EDIT: Like in between the floor and light, in the middle

First pic is from Chriscorp in v20.

We did it by making the floor out of 1x1s for the fixed function renderer. Then we used Eksi's lights and placed the ambient light just above the floor spot.

I don't think this works with shaders due to the point light glitch

oh well, I guess I'll have to find another way.

good idea, just tried that. The lit area is bigger now but it's still just as bright, which looks a little bit too bright. Are there dim ambient lights?
