The main problem is that they are either too far away or too close. if the tactical advantage of high ground wasn't circumvented by 1x1 towers, tnt, and magic teleporting testicles we wouldn't have to build an obsidian keep at the bottom of the ocean.

The closest i think we can come to having a safe base would be Terrafirmacraft's cobblestone, the only issue is that TFC requires we be online all the time to tend to animals and everything generally takes too loving long.

EDIT: it would also take us about 30 minutes to reach the closest settlement via nether travel.

Factions should only have two bases at once, and the other one should be like a mob grinder or something.

If you're spreading out your claim to anything besides a square, you're doing it wrong.
