The magnum is useful when they are further away but since they mostly rush into close combat where they are seriously overpowered ( especially the grunts with shotguns which always rush towards you until they can blast you in the face ) it's not that useful. The 357 is not that useful against multipile targets aswell.

Also, i can combat Headcrabs and Zombies easily with a crowbar, Headcrabs: Have them leap towards you, then dodge and crowbar then while they try to jump again, Zombies: Run straight up to them while holding the fire button and quickly back up, doing this, you will land two hits, one going up to the zombie and one backing away, repeat this twice per zombie
I haven't figured a good way for me to combat other enemies that don't involve the spray and pray method, though now i have a shotgun, that might change

Try to headshot bullsquids with the magnum - if you hit the head they should be instantly killed.
Hound eyes are easier to kill with the Spas 12 than most weapons.
