Your friend's story is bullstuff. Nobody with 1/8th of a brain would let their "fancy" car at a mechanic shop for over 4 years without questioning it. No family would avoid a lawsuit simply because "the guy is nice". No mechanic would keep a car for over 4 years. And no mechanic would refuse to give up a vehicle.
