How can I make my server less boring, yet still have players?

Host something you'll actually have fun with.

(shut up it's the only way to get players)

Getting players is entirely irrelevant if you don't enjoy hosting it.

If you're hosting something fun, people will want to take part in that fun. You have players, and you're also having fun.
You don't have to be constrained to what you know works.

that's the thing: they don't.
they join if i'm hosting a family RP, but not if i'm hosting anything else.

i don't have a TDM build right on hand, but i guess i could try making one.

there is an idea.
host a HELP WANTED server and have people help you build.
you can make friends that way.
also, if you want help, I'm available and happy to help.

i've tried hosting creeper servers, zombie servers(with my own builds), flood RPs, probably others i can't remember
i don't really like TDMs/DMs because i'm terrible at them ;-;

Hmm, host something you AND the people on the server can argee with that IYO (In your opinion) is fun.

i find the most fun in more social servers

where its laid back, no forced activity to do, but activities that you can do
and lots of chat

i used to host a ski server

where you would just ski down the slopes for fun

it was really fun because, you could ski down and just chat, you never had to be better than others or anything

you just chatted and ski'd
