Personally:
Snake is great if you're into power.
He's 3rd heavyweight character and all his attacks are hard hitting.
His up-B is a great recovery.
Grenades.

Peach is fairly decent in my mind, and her side-B and up-B are good recovery moves.
Turnips are a must
A slapping is great


Don't use metaknight. He's banned in tournaments.

Also, final destination is a crappy map if your character relies on below attacking.
This especially applies to Snake.

Battlefield all the way.

Also, Marth is a great quick hitter.
Ike is a fairly strong hitter. I love them both.

Do some warm up rounds beforehand to get to know your characters as well.
Even though it is obvious some characters are better than others, if you know yours well, you can easily comeback around and find what works.

I use Ice Climbers, Ike, Or Pit. I truly think there pretty good, out of those 3 I think Ike is better.

It's basicly how well the characters pair up against each other.
Especially during tourneys

Gannon vs. Link would be a pretty fair fight.
Gannon vs. Metaknight would not.
