No you dont.
Playing levels and leveling up gives you Coins. Plus you get 15 free coins every day. The Gold Purchasing system didn't always exist, and people made good levels without it.
Quit Cher Bitchin.
If you make a good level with a few items and get some plays on it you will get Levels and EXP, along with Coins
