Basically you want side scrolling NES style games, i remember i saw a really good one on kongregate where you had to kill aliens and you could upgrade your fighter jet and stuff. |

When an enemy is killed, touch their falling wreckage to get junk armor, though that only works when you aren't locking your aim direction.
