my school makes us give our mac-addresses so that they can hax our laptops. never gave mine, can do anything i want.

a lot of people actually get busted for stuff on their computer because they were stupid enough to give it to the school.

Your personal laptop? I don't think they have the right to do that...

They don't hax it, they track packets going in and out of your devices. Each device's network interface has a specific MAC address that can't be changed, and this is how they identify which packet goes through what device.

In some cases with NICs and network hardware (such as switches) it is possible to change it.

network administrators who use Nessus or Satan can't be trusted imo.

Our school has a port-based whitelist, and some kind of domain blacklist (not sure about how that works, I've never had any trouble with it). It's only on TCP though, and it doesn't even filter what happens on the whitelisted ports (hint: SSH and various VPN services).

Err, they can see the MAC in the logs anyway (although they can't link it to you unless you have a stupid computer nickname).

My school black listed all the devices that don't belong to them, My iPod is now just a $200 dollar paper weight that plays music

I was joking when I said they 'hax' it. Deeerrrrp.

They can literally access your personal laptop's camera, activate it and look through it. People are getting busted almost everyday for stuff on their computers that are being monitored. Thankfully I decided not to give my address out. Lol.

That's still not how it works, unless they have a backdoor installed on the computer.

We can bring laptops to school and use them if we want, but if we want to use our school networt to surf the internet we must give our mac address so they can whitelist it.
I don't see where a mac address is a security risk?

My school just blocks research sites, and it's really bad at it too, since you can still go on websites with naked pictures on them. only issue is it blocks almost every filesharing website, and you can't upload or download files.

our school blocked downloading, but not rightclick>save as
looool

Obviously IE is the only way to get on the internet.

Err, what? I think someone doesn't really understand how HTTP works.
