Distant Backdrops

I just came up with an interesting idea, and I'm not quite sure if it's around yet. What I'm looking for is say a map, where if you make the ground translucent, you would be able to see distant mountains and that underground; or as to simulate great height. Anyway, thanks.

This actually seems like a pretty good idea. Many of the old "slate" style maps had ground-level backdrops in the form of mountains and unreachable hills too. I think that it'd be nice if those were added along with what you're suggesting.
